"Okay. This is the last place on the list." Priestly stepped out of the Cosmobile, which Trucker had cheerfully loaned them for their day of apartment hunting, and leaned against the door. "Which means if we don't like this place, we're starting from scratch and I have to move back in with Mom and Dad until we find something good."

"And we can't have that." Jen stepped up next to him and looked down at her notebook. "Two bedrooms, internet ready, pets negotiable, so Ramone'll probably be welcome."

"And if not I'll sneak him in."

"Hey, I did not sign up for smuggling." She shook her head. "One bathroom, so I'd have to put up with your make-up cluttering everything up."

"Hey, I'll have you know I'm very orderly about my make up."

"Uh huh. We can even afford this place, assuming you actually start, you know, working for Trucker." Priestly mimed being shot through the heart and Jen smiled. "It's cute. What do you think, Dinah?"

Dinah grinned over at him. "Or what you might not be wearing under them, I guess. C'mon, Jen! No one's home. We can get an idea of what it looks like inside."

". . . I thought that was what the realtor was for?" Jen held back by the car. "I mean, she'll be here in a few minutes, right?"

Dinah directed a questioning look at Priestly, then coaxed, "Don't you want to see? Ooo, look. Tiny cute kitchen. Stairs!" She took a step back and gave the tree a considering look. "I wonder if I can climb that..."

"Can't hurt anything to look in the window," Priestly pointed out. Then he groaned. "Dinah, no. Wait until we've actually put down a deposit or something first?"

"Ohh, fine. Spoilsport. I won't climb up and look at the roof drains." She squinted upward. "They look like they're in pretty good shape anyway... You ever lived with anyone before, Jen?"

"Just my parents. They're kind of conservative." She glanced over at Priestly. "I told them he was a girl named Pam."

"Sometimes," Priestly noted. "Though I've never gone by Pam."

"He makes a very pretty girl," Dinah had to admit, hopping off the front stoop, then realizing that might sound kinda unlikely. "Really! And he will totally have your back if you need it in any kind of problem or fight. Although Santa Cruz doesn't look like it has... gangs, or anything."

Priestly shook his head. "Not that I've seen, and I grew up here."

Mind you, he grew up in upper class white suburbia. But that wasn't the point.

Jen grinned. "I dunno, I can't even picture Priestly without the goatee. But I'm sure we'll be fine."

"Cool." Dinah flopped down on the stoop, and grinned at them. "I'm glad he's going to be in good hands, you know? And I'm so IM'ing you guys and texting you every other day to find out what the special at Trucker's diner is."

"You know," said Jen. "I'm working on a website for that."

"She's not actually going to be texting for that," Priestly pointed out.

Jen frowned, then brightened. "Oh. Right. I knew that."

"Both of you." Dinah snickered and reached up to tug on Jen's hand. "C'mon. And I can visit here, right?" she wheedled. "I'll bring you guys cool toys. And possibly ice cream from New Gotham."
