Taystee Diner, New Gotham, the lunch shift, Monday

Priestly had never worked at a place as large as this diner before. It was a bit of an adjustment -- especially when you factored in going from managing Luke's in Fandom to being a lowly peon here -- but he liked his coworkers well enough, no one tried to stick things in his hair, and there were even a few regulars he'd gotten to know working the lunch counter on the days he didn't have afternoon classes. New Gotham was almost as full of lovable weirdoes as Santa Cruz had been, which was good, as they needed the lovable ones to balance out the criminally insane ones.

And, hey, if harmlessly flirting with the hot cougar who came in every now and then to order a late lunch to go for her and her "business associates" got him a bigger tip, that was even better. She liked to stop and chat for a bit while she waited for her order, and Priestly always kept her coffee full and the compliments running while she did. Carlos, the usual lunch time cook, liked to tease Priestly about how he had to keep his dates straight so Dinah wouldn't find out he was cheating on her with an old lady, but Priestly was so used to getting grief from the kitchen staff that he barely noticed.

He did kind of miss troubleshooting Fandom's occasional harmless jaunts into the surreal, though. A lunch rush just wasn't the same if you didn't have an eagle turning into a naked mayor at the counter.

"So, how long have you lived here in New Gotham?" 'Arlene' was dipping a spoon into a chocolate mousse concoction, giving Priestly a sideways amused look.

Really, he was just yummy! So completely trusting. Harley wondered if he knew about Dinah's little side projects.

"I've been here so long I feel like a native. Although I moved here just after I finished college, for an internship." She licked a drop of chocolate off her spoon. "New Gotham has so many exciting opportunities. And you can't say the villainy doesn't make life more -- vivid."

"Welllll..." Harley's smile turned teasing. "Avoid the Narrows, unless you're looking for thugs to hire. Don't try parking downtown, they boot cars for fun and profit without checking the time... and look deeeeeep into my eyes, and I'll tell you the last thing."

"Excellent." Harley could feel her eyes change to dark, swirling whirlpools of shiny black, and giggled. "Priestly, you'll do anything I ask you to do, won't you? Because you like me?"

"Awww. I like you too." Harley leaned forward and pet his beard. "I need you to do something for me. Today, if you can. Tomorrow, if you can't. But very very soon. Now, your best friend. Dinah?"

"I need you... to kill her. However you want! Get creative." She smiled and tilted her head. "Just be sure it's in front of Barbara, okay? Do you think you can manage that?"

"Ohh, that's wonderful!" Harley clasped her hands and grinned. "Thank you so much. You should probably avoid having Helena around, though. You know she'd try to stop you. Protect her little 'sister.'" She leaned over to pat his hand. "And you won't mention this to anyone, will you?"
