A noodle cart in Manila, Monday

After a brief stint in a drunk tank in Kuala Lumpur -- he really was going to have to learn how to shut his mouth instead of antagonizing the local police force before he ended up facing off against a cop much less inclined to humor an irritating American -- Priestly had made it to the Philippines.

Manila, he decided, was made of awesome.

He was currently arguing with a man running one of the noodle carts that peppered the streets, trying to talk him into giving a punk (literally) kid from the States an under the table job dishing out glass noodles to tourists. Apparently, the guy wasn't going to make any decisions until he'd talked to the owner -- who lived in the States.

Priestly was beginning to wonder if he maybe should have stuck to Tex Mex in Austin.

"Probably. They have lots of alcohol around here," Priestly said, deliberately misinterpreting. "Also, they might be called typhoons."

Dinah snorted, and said, "And now I will be making Barbara text me updates from the Weather Channel in your world. Although if there were an Alcohol Channel, I could know if you were risking the drunk tank again." She made a face. "I'm not doing that again soon, regular school starts a week from Monday for me."

"Yeah? You excited?"

"I am! I didn't think I would be, since I took classes all summer..." And got a B in Philosophy, and an A in Spanish, much to her shock. "But I miss the seeing Gabby every day, when she's not doing her internships, and the Jump Club guys, and I really miss Kyle. Who'll be back on Saturday." Yaaaay, boyfriend time before classes started! "Not sure I can stick with the Drama thing this year. But we'll see."

"Hey, that'd mean I won't have to worry about missing your plays. You and Kyle are still good, then?"

"Yeah, we are." She still hadn't told him some stuff. Not just the Priestly stuff, but about Helena and Barbara being her partners in crimefighting. But... "We went out to the Fyreborn Islands in June, Karla's world, you know? He handled it pretty well. And I got to see him a couple weekends this summer, but it wasn't the same." She grinned a little. "You meeting any cute girls in Manila? Any summer romances blossoming?"

"Oh yeah, I'm leaving behind a string of broken hearts." He really, really wasn't.

"Dude," Dinah remonstrated. "I know you're talking to Jen, most likely, but are you talking to Tish too?" Look, there had to be something out there. "Let some cute chick in the next country pick you up and take you home for a while!" It could happen! Maybe! It worked for Claudia, right?

Priestly was still convinced that Claudia was a crazy fluke. "I don't want to seem like I'm too easy."

So what would that make his future wife? And Future Dinah? Questions it was probably better not to ask.

"You're on a round-the-world tour. A short-term but heartfelt flingy thing is completely acceptable. But okay, not required. Just saying, keep your eyes open."

"Alright, alright, I won't be the boy version of an old spinster lady, I promise."

"Good." And if some level Dinah was better with this where she couldn't see it, well... Anyway. "Do you think you'll be back around your birthday? Or Christmas? Or should I be finding a way to send you stuff when those come up in a couple months?" And aww, she'd really miss him a lot by that point.

"I should probably at least make a cameo back home. We could do a little Christmas party."

"Yaaaay," Dinah cheered. "And then you can take off again and hit the parts of the world you missed." It really didn't sound like going back to school soon was in the cards. But he was having fun, and that was way more important. "Next time, you drunk-dial *me* before you start calling the cops names."

She snickered. "Just admiring you. Really!" Dinah grinned. "Call me if Grody hires you. And don't forget to send those pictures!"

"You say that like I could possibly not show off all the things I'm doing." For one thing, Jen would kill him if he didn't send pics along, too.

"True." Dinah grinned. "So just do it as soon as you can. And don't get arrested again without calling. And don't go near any volcanoes that might go off either."
