Priestly's apartment, New Gotham, Thursday afternoon

"Come on, Priestly!" Tia called through the door to Priestly's room. "You've gotta go out sometime!"

"I for one support Priestly's newfound interest in hermitage," Mark said. Tia ignored him with the ease borne of long practice.

"Priestly!"

The door cracked open, and Priestly peered out, Stevesie perched on his shoulders and peering over his head. "A) it's negative a billion degrees out. 2) the question mark guy is on the streets again. I'm not coming out until he's been arrested and it's spring."

Tia sighed. "You have classes."

"I can turn my assignments in online and the professors are video-podcasting the lectures."

"You have laundry," Tia tried.

"Not going outside means not needing clean clothes." Priestly smirked and started closing the door.

"I'm going to call Dinah on you!" Tia said quickly. The door stopped closing. After a moment, it opened up all the way.

"Dammit, Tia."

Tia smirked back, showing her phone in her hand, the screen already set to Dinah's number. "Come out and I won't have to." She looked him over and sighed. "And put some damn pants on."

"The diner?" Priestly made a face. "All the waitresses are either too young or have three kids. Not really my speed."

"Awww. I bet the young ones have crushes on you." Yep, of course they did. "You're probably their Trucker. Only not as old."

"Woah," Priestly said, mind blown. "That is way too much responsibility."

"You'll grow into it," Dinah said with a snicker, patting one of his boots with hers, and taking a bite of her croissant. "I didn't see Mark when I stopped by, is he hibernating the way you wanted to?"

"That would indicate a willingness to go outside during the day when it isn't winter." Priestly shrugged. "I think he might secretly be a vampire."

"But not a sparkly one." Always a plus. "Or one that's secretly draining you of blood in the middle of the night?"

"Nah. This pallor is all because of seaonal affective disorder, I promise."

"You realize that answer means I'm going to drag you out of your lair to join me on more exploratory missions, Sous."

"But I worked so hard on my lair!"

"Until that plan to feed the world comes together, you still need sunlight. Like a gently blooming plant."

"I have one of those lamp things."

"Don't make me bring Alfred into this. He'll give you the Look. And gently question your life choices."

Priestly narrowed his eyes at her. "No fair bringing in your secret weapon."

"I play to win. Hate the game, not the player." Dinah grinned, cheered. "Fair's fair, you get an equal request, as long as it's not leaving New Gotham or hiding for the next few months."

"Why can't I put restrictions on mine? Like 'you don't get to drag me outside if it's literally freezing'?"

"'Cause I won," Dinah patiently explained. Like they'd already arm-wrestled for this or something, which they kind of had. He was here, wasn't he? "And I won't drag you outside if it's zero degrees Fahrenheit, how's that work?"

"Okay, the limit definitely needs to be higher than that. That is more than 30 degrees below freezing."

"It's not like your insides freeze when the water does!"

"That is not what I'm worried about."

"What are you worried about?" Dinah leaned forward to whisper, like they were in a spy thriller and he was about to pass along the secret codes.

"Freezing my outsides." You couldn't tell him frostbite and hypothermia weren't things, Dinah. You could only put on so much.

That got him a blank look that was completely deliberate, then giggles as Dinah couldn't hold onto the deadpan.

"Should I be looking into getting you heated mittens, or maybe a thermal cup?"

". . . They make those?" The mittens, he meant. Little portable heaters sounded good, okay?

"Yeeesss." You could get them on Amazon! "And you could put the mittens anywhere you want, I guess. This is what I should've gotten you for Christmas, isn't it?"

"I may need a crash course on winter weather survival," Priestly admitted.
